Japan teenager Charlie Hara-Hinze has emerged as one of the players to watch around the historic India vs Japan T20I in Sano on September 22.
The 17-year-old left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder is already familiar with some of India’s young stars. Hara-Hinze previously dismissed Vaibhav Sooryavanshi when Japan faced India in the 2024 ACC Under-19 Asia Cup in Sharjah.
Hara-Hinze Dismissed Sooryavanshi in 2024
During the 2024 U19 Asia Cup meeting, Sooryavanshi scored 23 runs before being dismissed by Hara-Hinze in the eighth over. The Japan youngster also contributed an unbeaten 35 with the bat in that encounter.
The previous meeting has added an interesting storyline to the historic senior-level fixture, particularly with Sooryavanshi now part of India's senior T20I squad.
Hara-Hinze has continued to develop rapidly since that encounter. He represented Japan at the 2026 ICC Men's Under-19 Cricket World Cup and is now part of the country's senior squad.
A Historic India vs Japan T20I
India and Japan are meeting for the first time in men's international cricket on September 22 at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture.
The match is being played as a one-off T20I and forms part of preparations for the 2026 Asian Games. It also marks the beginning of celebrations around 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and Japan.
Japan captain Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming has highlighted Hara-Hinze's previous success against Sooryavanshi while discussing the challenge of facing India's young batting talent.
Charlie Hara-Hinze's Rise
Hara-Hinze has already gained experience beyond junior cricket. ICC described him as an emerging spin-bowling all-rounder, while his performances at youth level have helped establish him as one of Japan's promising young players.
He was also part of Japan's 2026 Under-19 World Cup campaign, where the team recorded a victory over Tanzania. His inclusion in the senior squad reflects the country's efforts to develop young players through its international pathway.
The teenager has previously spoken about the potential for cricket to grow significantly in Japan and believes the country can continue progressing over the next two decades.
India vs Japan: A New Chapter
India enter the fixture as the reigning T20 World Cup champions, while Japan are ranked 41st in the men's T20I rankings. The match therefore represents a major occasion for Japanese cricket and an opportunity for its players to test themselves against one of the world's leading international teams.
For Hara-Hinze, the occasion carries an additional personal storyline because of his previous dismissal of Sooryavanshi.
With both players now part of their respective senior squads, their paths crossing again highlights the rapid development of Japan's young cricketer and adds another intriguing chapter to the first India-Japan men's international encounter.
