Pakistan captain Fatima Sana has been punished by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following an on-field incident involving India opener Shafali Verma during the Women's Asia Cup 2026 clash in Dubai.
Sana was fined 10 per cent of her match fee and received one demerit point for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct. The incident occurred after she dismissed Shafali Verma during India's chase.
Fatima Sana's Gesture Towards Shafali Verma
The incident took place in the second over of India's innings. Shafali Verma had started the chase aggressively before chipping a catch back towards Sana.
After completing the catch, the Pakistan captain gestured in the direction of the pavilion. The ICC determined that the action breached Article 2.5 of its Code of Conduct, which covers gestures or actions that disparage a batter or could provoke an aggressive reaction following a dismissal.
ICC Takes Action Against Pakistan Captain
Following the incident, Fatima Sana was charged with a Level 1 offence and fined 10 per cent of her match fee.
One demerit point was also added to her disciplinary record. This was particularly significant because it was Sana's second offence within a 24-month period, taking her total to two demerit points during that period.
Sana Admits The Offence
Fatima Sana admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Supriya Rani Das of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees.
As she accepted the charge and punishment, there was no requirement for a formal hearing.
India Defeat Pakistan By Seven Wickets
The incident came during a one-sided Women's Asia Cup contest between the arch-rivals.
Pakistan were bowled out for just 55, with India's bowlers dominating the innings. Sana was one of Pakistan's better performers with the ball, taking three wickets, including the dismissal of Shafali Verma.
India eventually chased down the target in just 8.4 overs to complete a seven-wicket victory.
What The Demerit Point Means
The latest demerit point leaves Sana with two points on her disciplinary record over the past 24 months.
Under the ICC regulations, four or more demerit points within a 24-month period are converted into suspension points. Therefore, further disciplinary offences could have more serious consequences for the Pakistan captain.
The punishment adds another talking point to an already high-profile India-Pakistan encounter. For Pakistan, the immediate focus will now shift towards their remaining Women's Asia Cup campaign, while Sana will need to avoid further disciplinary breaches.
