Kevin Pietersen Named England White-Ball Mentor Ahead of 2027 World Cup
ICC Hall of Famer Kevin Pietersen has returned to the England setup as a specialist mentor for the white-ball teams ahead of the 2027 Men's Cricket World Cup.
Kevin Pietersen has made a surprise return to the England cricket setup after being appointed as a specialist mentor for the country's white-ball teams ahead of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027.
The former England captain and recently inducted ICC Hall of Famer will work with Brendon McCullum's white-ball setup as England begin their preparations for next year's World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
Kevin Pietersen Returns To England Setup
Pietersen's appointment marks his first official involvement with the England senior setup since his international career ended in 2014.
The South Africa-born batter was one of England's most influential white-ball players during the 2000s and early 2010s. He scored 4,440 runs in 136 ODIs at an average of 40.73, including nine centuries.
He was also a key member of England's victorious 2010 T20 World Cup campaign and finished that tournament as Player of the Tournament.
Pietersen To Work With Brendon McCullum
Pietersen will join Brendon McCullum's coaching staff and will work closely with England's white-ball players over the next 12 months.
His first assignment will come during England's upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka. He is then expected to remain involved during tours of Australia and South Africa before returning for home series against Pakistan and New Zealand.
His involvement will continue into England's preparations for the 2027 Cricket World Cup.
Why Pietersen's Experience Could Help England
Pietersen brings extensive international experience and a strong understanding of conditions in Southern Africa, where the 2027 World Cup will be played.
His attacking approach made him one of England's most recognisable batters, while his experience across ODI and T20 cricket could provide valuable input to England's current batting group.
McCullum welcomed Pietersen's appointment and highlighted the former batter's experience, knowledge and stature within English cricket.
Pietersen Excited By England Return
Pietersen said he was proud to have been asked to help England on their journey towards the 2027 World Cup.
The appointment also represents a significant change from his previous relationship with the England setup, which ended following a controversial period after the 2013-14 Ashes series.
Now, more than a decade after his final appearance for England, Pietersen will return in a mentoring role rather than as a player.
England's 2027 World Cup Preparation Begins
England won the 2019 Men's Cricket World Cup and will be looking to challenge for another 50-over title in 2027.
The tournament will be hosted across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. England's management has therefore brought in Pietersen well ahead of the competition to add experience and specialist knowledge to the white-ball setup.
With the former England captain now part of McCullum's think tank, Pietersen's return adds another major name to England's preparations for the next World Cup.
